After you have collected the apical solution (see Ion Flux Protocol), you can obtain the value for net ion flux using the following equation:

Net Ion Flux = (volume of apical solution)(concentration of ion)

Volume of apical soltion:

- simply use a pipetman to pipet up the apical solution in a 1 mL tip and obtain the volume by adjusting the dial such that the apical solution fill exactly to the end of the tip.

Concentration of ion:

- Ion selective electrodes - based on reverse potential
- Dye - based on color changes upon ion binding
- Chemical Reaction - based on color or fluorescent products
